Bacterial Vaginosis

BV is caused by an imbalance of the naturally occurring bacteria in the vagina. (Otherwise known as Healthy vaginal microbiota ) consists mainly of genus Lactobacillus, such as L. crispatus, and the lactic acid they produce is thought to protect against infection by pathogenic species.

lactobacilli have been generally considered as the gatekeepers of the vaginal ecosystem

During imbalance :  increase in Gardnerellavaginalis and Peptostreptococcusanaerobius and Candidiasis (yeast infection)  and  a decrease in the number of Lactobacillus species that comprise the healthy vaginal microbiota will occur. This will further lead to increase in Gram negative anaerobes, E.Coli and other Bacteriae which leads to further infection.

Mostly  due to douching, new sex partner, antibiotics, and using an intrauterine device among others.

However, it is not considered a sexually transmitted infection.

Common symptoms include increased vaginal discharge that often smells like fish. The discharge is usually white or gray in color. Burning with urination may occur Occasionally there may be no symptoms. BV is the most common vaginal infection in women of reproductive age.
